How should you prepare to defend yourself in violent situations if you’re generally a peaceful person? Most people who find themselves the victim or target of a violent attack have never been involved in anything violent. Because it catches them completely by surprise, and they have never for a minute thought about what they would do in case fighting back was ever necessary, it is often much harder for them to escape, increasing the possible severity of the attack.

Before it gets to this point, you must learn how to fight back. It’s important to develop a strategy that you’ll be comfortable with. If you have a theoretical self defense strategy in mind, but wouldn’t be willing to use it when the time comes, then it will do you no good.

Many of us have grown up with false ideas about violence. You may have been taught that violence isn’t the best answer, that dealing with criminals should be left up to the police, or that a mugger won’t hurt you if you simply hand over your wallet or your purse. Many people also believe that violence, even attacks on the street, have implicit rules. The truth is, none of these misconceptions are true. Violent attackers do not follow honor codes. Nor is it possible to avoid attacks entirely by staying out of bad areas. If you are being attacked, you must fight back; you can’t rely on the police to come running.

Whether you are a pacifist or simply don’t like the idea of being violent, you may be looking for ways to fight back that are in line with your peaceful attitude. This is possible, though it requires careful thought and planning of what you would do in a violent or potentially violent situation.

If you know that you would be uncomfortable fighting back in any manner, then your first line of defense is to not be there. Avoid areas that are known to be dangerous, and do not interact with someone who is trying to antagonize you. Of course, this strategy is not always possible or effective. It is important to recognize that you could become the target of an attack anywhere, at any time. Simply avoiding times and places where this may be more likely will not safeguard you from such situations.

Some potential attacks can be diffused through communication or retreat. Your first line of a nonviolent defense is to get away from it, if possible. If you spot a potentially dangerous situation, go in the other direction. Do not engage an attacker in a yelling match, and get out of there as fast as you can.

For those who are hesitant to fight violence with violence, self defense products such as pepper spray or a stun gun make perfect sense. They are nonlethal devices, which can alleviate your fears of injuring someone, even if that person is attacking you. Guns, though effective, may be lethal. They are also difficult for beginners to use accurately. Pepper spray and stun guns, on the other hand, can be used by untrained civilians and are very effective. These devices will take your attacker down quickly, but leave no permanent effects.

If you are in search of even more passive ways to stop an attack, carry both a cell phone and a personal alarm with you at all times. A cell phone can be used to call for help, while a personal alarm emits a loud beeping noise that will scare many attackers away as well as attracting the attention of bystanders. Still, when it comes to self defense, you are usually on your own. Once the attack starts, it is unlikely that anyone can come to your aid fast enough. This is why it is so essential to carry self defense products to help you escape harm.

No matter your strategy, you must prepare mentally for the possibility of danger. Because you are not willing to be a victim of attack, prepare yourself to fight back. Have a plan of action even if you never plan to need it. If a situation arises where you must defend yourself, you won’t have time to consider what you should do and how you should react to the situation. Recognize that a violent attack is a lot different from a sporting fight. In an attack situation, one participant (the victim) is unwilling, but is forced to fight back. Even if you don’t believe that violence solves everything, face the fact that you may be violently attacked, making fighting back your only option.

What exactly is Krav Maga? And Is it a good self defense class for a beginner?

I know it's a kind of martial arts. I am looking into take self-defense classes. There is a great self defense school near my home and they offer a krav maga class. Would this be a good class to take for a beginner? I have never taken self defense classes before. It seems, from reading the information about the class that it would be a practical class which teaches you how to fight against attackers in street situations. I want a class like that. Being a previous victim of domestic violence, should that happen again, I want to be able to fight back. Not only that, I think it's important for women to know how to defend themselves.
