Approximately thirteen million people (approximately 5% of the U.S. population) are victims of crime every year. So how can you protect yourself in the 21st Century? Well, handguns are lethal weapons that do stop criminals, though they have severe ramifications. Not only could you be charged with a serious crime, most states prevent carrying a weapon without a permit of some kind, if one is available at all. Most of the time, you are breaking many laws by carrying a loaded weapon with you.
There are many types of non-lethal self defense weapons; defensive sprays, tasers, knives, alarms, batons, and a wide variety of stun guns in many shapes, sizes, and voltages. This article will focus on stun guns.
What is a stun gun?
A stun gun is a hand-held, battery-powered or electrically charged device that is designed to deliver a strong electric shock to stop an attacker. There not guns in the traditional sense because they don’t shoot bullets; rather, they shoot electricity into an attacker. A stun gun has two prongs at the end of the device. Touching an attacker with the prongs while you pull the trigger will cause a strong electrical current to go from the prongs through the attacker’s clothes into his body.
Pressing the prongs on the stun gun against a person will quickly immobilize an attacker by causing an intense pain and complete loss of muscle control. However, because they operate at low amperage, no serious or permanent injury is inflicted on the attacker; they will just be immobilized for 5-60 minutes depending on how long they were stunned. Stun guns are used by police departments, security agencies, and individuals desiring strong non-lethal protection against attack. They have been proven to be an excellent defensive device. They operate on one to three 9-volt batteries and range from 50,000 volts to 1,000,000 volts.
How does a stun gun work?
The stun gun uses high voltage and low amperage to affect the muscular and neural systems of the human body. They does not rely on high amperage or pain for results, rather most stun guns operate on milliamps. It feels like getting hit in the funny bone x 10,000. The stun gun dumps its energy into the muscles at a high pulse frequency. This makes the muscles contract rapidly, which results in energy loss, which depletes your muscles of needed blood sugars. The attacker cannot produce energy for his muscles, and exhausted, his body is unable to function properly for up to sixty minutes. The resulting energy loss makes it difficult to move and function. This causes disorientation and loss of balance, leaving the attacker in a passive and confused condition. Still there is no significant effect on the heart and other organs.
When the attacker’s neuromuscular system is overwhelmed and controlled by the stun gun he loses his balance. Just a 1/4 second contact will repel and startle the attacker, giving intense pain and muscle contraction. One to two seconds will cause intense pain, muscle spasms and a dazed mental state; this may drop the attacker to the ground. Over three seconds will cause intense pain, loss of balance and muscle control mental confusion, and disorientation. Generally any charge over three seconds will cause the aggressor to fall to the ground. The aggressor will be unable to recover for several minutes and effects may last for up to fifteen minutes. This gives you plenty of time to run for help.

The 3 Stages Of Street Violence
Training for a street confrontation is very, very different from training in sport based martial arts, or martial art competitions. It is equally fair to say it is very different from doing sparring or martial art drills in a dojo.
In a street confrontation there are no rules, no referees, probably no one there to break it up and do you seriously think you can tap out ? In this situation anything goes and you have to expect the unexpected.
So how can we properly train for the unexpected ? Your training needs to include realistic rehearsal training and must include techniques and strategies based on what is happening out there.
For reality based training to be effective you must be exposed to, and learn how to deal with three main conflict stages.
Stage 1 – Pre Fight
Most situations can be avoided before they even start provided your training includes strategies, tactics and realistic rehearsal. Developing awareness skills, threat assessment and verbal skills should all form the beginnings of your pre fight training. Learning how to avoid confrontations both physically and mentally is a critical part of any realistic self defence program.
Stage 2 – In Fight
This is the stage that a great deal of self defence courses and martial art schools focus on. The problem here is most of them are based on tradition, set sequences or just theory.
Remember earlier I said you have to expect the unexpected. Not one confrontation is going to be the same and using complex forms or patterns for a certain situation is very unlikely to work in reality. The conflict stage is very unlikely going to be just you and a single opponent and your training needs to reflect the complexities and varieties of situation you could face. Training to fight one opponent is no longer realistic. What about ways to fight criminals with weapons, dealing with gang attacks, muggings, rape attacks, robberies ?
Does your training deal with the different levels of force needed to handle these different levels of violence ?
Stage 3 – Post Fight
There are many areas that your realistic self defence training should incorporate here as well. This may be administering first aid, effective escape methods, way

You would think that the simple act of kicking the groin would be just that – simple. Unfortunately, most people (including martial art instructors) don’t understand the full mechanics involved in a successful groin strike. The thought is simply, “Kick him in the groin and he’ll go down.” This unfortunately is not always the case. We are going to give you the 4 common mistakes to avoid when striking the groin so when you utilize the move the damage will be effective and permanent.
Mistake #1 – Kicking from Distance
For the groin strike to be effective, it needs to be up close and personal. As we teach our students, you want to “separate the tri-state area” permanently. This can only be done from a close quarter position. If you attempt to strike the groin from a distance, most men have a built in radar that quickly deflects and protects their groin – unless you’re in close.
Mistake #2 – Attacking Straight On
The body’s spinal reflex (the response that automatically protects you without conscious brain involvement) forces the hands to the groin, the upper body bent, the knees slightly collapsed and the chin jutting out. If you attack straight on which is taught in most martial arts classes, you are going to get headbutted and injured.
The goal is to strike and move your body away at a 30-45 degree angle so that you are not in the direct line of fire of his head.
Mistake #3 – Striking the Groin First
Nothing is more deflating than when you attempt to strike the groin first only to have your attacker defend himself and come after you. And remember, every guy expects you to strike his groin first. The first two strikes/kicks should be anywhere but the groin area. We recommend striking to the head and neck which forces the body backwards and thereby giving you a cleaner shot to the groin. He won’t expect the head shots and therefore will not be focused on protecting his groin area.
Mistake #4 – No Follow Through
Everyone thinks that the groin area is so sensitive that if you just tap them, a man will fall down in agonizing pain. The reality is that most men have taken quite a bit of contact through sports, etc and can take a bit of pain. Further, if they are attacking you, their adrenaline is already flowing thereby inhibiting their pain sensors. The only recourse is to attack to crush the groin. The best attack is from underneath striking in an upward motion in order to “split the tri-state area,” thereby causing the maximum amount of damage and pain and invoking the spinal reflex.
With a few simple modifications, you can make your next groin strike a conflict ender.
